World of Tanks features more than 600 vehicles from 11 game nations. Most vehicles can be researched using Combat Experience and then purchased using credits.
Types of Vehicles
Vehicles can fall into one of four categories:
- Researchable vehicles – A vast collection of vehicles of different nations and types, available to all players. These vehicles can be fully or partially researched using Combat Experience, Free Experience, or blueprints.
- Premium vehicles – Unique vehicles that don't need to be researched. You can purchase Premium vehicles for gold or bonds in the in-game Store or from the Premium Shop. Premium vehicles can be received as a gift, obtained as a reward during special in-game events, or awarded for completing special missions. With Premium vehicles, you earn more resources—credits, Combat Experience, Free Experience, and Crew Experience—than with researchable vehicles of the same tier.
- Collectors' vehicles – Special vehicles that are available for credits from the in-game Store. They are not bound to the Tech Tree. Players can obtain Collectors’ vehicles up to the highest tier of their vehicles researched within the corresponding nation. For example, by researching a Tier V vehicle in the French Tech Tree, you will gain access to all French Collectors’ vehicles, up to and including Tier V. You can research modules in Collectors’ vehicles using experience. When all modules have been researched, the vehicle obtains Elite status.
- Reward and special vehicles – Rare vehicles that are usually obtained in special battle modes and in-game events. These vehicles are not shown in the Tech Tree, and they do not need to be researched. Reward and special vehicles can be purchased for bonds from the in-game Store or for credits and gold during a special event, such as Black Market. Moreover, you can also earn reward and special vehicles for completing Personal Missions.
Research Vehicles
To research vehicles, you can use:
- Combat Experience earned in battles with researchable and Elite vehicles.
- Free Experience earned in each battle—5% of Combat Experience earned is converted into Free Experience. Free Experience can also be obtained by converting Combat Experience earned on Elite vehicles.
- Blueprint fragments earned by completing daily missions and Battle Pass Stages, or by participating in various in-game events.

Once a vehicle is researched, you can purchase it for credits.
In order to start researching a vehicle, you need to research all preceding vehicles in the branch. If you want to quickly advance along the branch, you can research only the required modules and subsequent vehicles.
However, you can also research additional modules in order to improve the technical characteristics of your vehicle. Moreover, vehicles with all modules and technical branches researched will earn the Elite status. Combat Experience earned on Elite vehicles can be spent on Accelerated Crew Training for this vehicle or used for conversion to Free Experience.
Research Vehicles With Combat Experience
In order to research a vehicle, make sure that all lower-tier vehicles in the branch have been researched and that you have enough experience. You can see how much experience you need by checking the number on the green background below the vehicle.
To research a new vehicle using experience:
- Go to the TECH TREE tab in your Garage.
- On the left side of the screen, choose the vehicle's nation. The Tech Tree of the relevant vehicle is displayed.
- Click on the vehicle you would like to research. On the screen that appears, you can look under the image of the vehicle to see the amount of experience needed to research it. If you do not have the necessary amount of experience, you can earn it in battles.

Research Vehicles With Blueprints
Vehicle blueprints are special items that provide a discount on the research cost of new vehicles.
Each blueprint consists of fragments that can be received in the following ways:
- By completing daily missions
- By completing special missions from Prime Gaming Kits
- By completing Stages in Battle Pass
- By participating in various in-game events
Each blueprint fragment provides a certain discount on the experience required to research a vehicle, and with a fully assembled blueprint, you can research a vehicle without spending any experience at all. Read more about how to research vehicles with blueprints in the Vehicle Blueprints guide.
