In this episode of Tank v Tank, we take an in-depth look at two iconic World War II tanks: the Sherman M4 and the Panzer IV. These formidable machines faced off during the intense battles in Normandy and provided a fascinating comparison of Allied and German engineering during the war.

The Sherman

The M4 Sherman was the most numerous Allied tank in Normandy. Entering service in 1942, it proved to be reliable, economic, and crew-friendly. With a crew of five and good mobility, it was a significant presence on the battlefield.

• Armor Thickness: Up to 90.8 mm (line-of-sight thickness with sloped armor)
• Main Gun: 75 mm M3 gun
• Maximum Speed: 30 mph

The Panzer IV

On the opposing side, the PzKpfW IV was the most numerous tank fielded by the German Army in 1944. Originally a pre-war design, it was upgraded extensively to remain effective throughout the war. With a crew of five and a 7.5cm KwK 40 gun, it was a formidable adversary for Allied tanks.

• Armor Thickness: Up to 80 mm (line-of-sight thickness with vertical armor)
• Main Gun: 75 mm KwK 40 L/48
• Maximum Speed: 26 mph

Both tanks were upgraded during their service lives, with the Sherman benefiting from sloped armor for better protection and the Panzer IV receiving additional armor plates and skirts.
