Hispanic Day is the biggest national holiday of the year for all of the international Spanish speaking communities around the world. It has got many names, but due to the fact that it’s being celebrated on October 12th, the date on which Christopher Columbus discovered the so-called “New World” in 1492, its most common designation is “Columbus Day” – the way it’s being called in the United States today.
Ever since the early 18th century, the various countries sharing Spanish language and cultural heritage have been celebrating this day as an occasion to show their unity in spirit, whilst also displaying their national pride. It’s for that reason that this day is being observed as a legally imposed national holiday in many countries around the world.
