General Sherman: Legacy Timeline

1820

William Tecumseh Sherman is born in Lancaster, Ohio—the beginning of a career that will shape U.S. military thinking for generations.

1840

Sherman graduates from West Point, entering the U.S. Army officer corps that will later form the backbone of Union high command.

1861

The Civil War begins. Sherman joins Union service and rises into major command as the conflict escalates nationwide.

1862

Battle of Shiloh. Brutal, high-casualty fighting hardens Sherman's outlook on war and the cost of victory.

1864

Atlanta Campaign and the March to the Sea. Sherman targets rail lines, depots, and industry to break Confederate logistics and morale.

1865

Carolinas Campaign and the final collapse of Confederate resistance. Major surrenders follow in spring 1865, ending large-scale fighting.

1869

Sherman becomes Commanding General of the U.S. Army, helping shape postwar strategy, doctrine, and the institution he served for decades.

1942
