In January 1944, the Allies found themselves confronting the Winter Line, which prevented them to pass through to Rome. In order to follow the highway to Rome between the mountains, the Allied Forces tried to reach a little town in the Cassino mountains, from which they could have a very good view and a strong defensive position. However, things did not go as planned. The Germans counter-attacked and there were numerous victims.
The Battle of Monte Cassino was a costly series of four battles, which first began on the 17th of January. The appalling terrain was a real problem for the Allied forces, who tried to push forward in these sharp mountains and large river landscapes.
