How to Play the Cromwell

FIREPOWER | SURVIVABILITY | MOBILITY | EQUIPMENT | CREW

Developed between 1941 and 1942 by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company (BRC&W) and mass-produced between 1943 and 1945, the VI Cromwell saw extensive use during the Battle of Normandy in June 1944. It was the first British tank to combine the high speed of a powerful Rolls-Royce Meteor engine with reasonable armor. The perfect combination for reconnaissance work in the field.

Firepower

The Cromwell can be equipped with five different cannons, the most powerful of which is the 75 mm Vickers HV gun. It combines over 2,000 DPM—even without a gun rammer—with a respectable punch and good penetration for its tier. The gun depression angle of –8 degrees allows certain flexibility around hilly terrain, but the mediocre dispersion and terrible gun handling force you to either get close to an enemy or remain stationary to hit reliably.

Top tip: The Cromwell inherits the QF 6-pdr Gun Mk. V from its predecessor, the Cavalier. Make sure to immediately upgrade your setup for better penetration and dispersion values.

Survivability

Armor is not the Cromwell's strong suit. The layout is mostly flat and thin, so there's little to no resistance to shots from enemies. Your best strategy to remain in the game until the end is staying on the move or staying well hidden behind bushes and cover, thanks to good camouflage values.

Mobility

The Cromwell was the fastest British tank to serve in the Second World War, with a top speed of 64 km/h, and it's still the fastest Tier VI medium tank in the game. This speed was extremely beneficial for both attack and defense, as well as for outmaneuvering opponents. And it's a quality that has been transferred to the battlefields of World of Tanks. Play as a flanker that surprises opponents or an active scout that reveals enemy advances.

Top tip: Speed is your biggest advantage, so make sure to research the Rolls-Royce Meteor engine early on. It vastly improves the acceleration and will help you survive longer.

Repair is essential when roaming around the battlefield, actively scouting for your team, or flanking unsuspecting opponents. You don’t want to be caught in a compromising position with your tracks down. The additional skills improve your gun and general performance in battle. Experienced crews will gain an additional edge on the field with the Brothers in Arms perk.

How to Play the Strv 74

FIREPOWER | SURVIVABILITY | MOBILITY | EQUIPMENT | CREW

At the end of the 1950s, the Swedish Army were in need of a light and maneuverable medium tank. They decided to modernize the trusted Strv m/42, which had been phased out only a few years earlier, by equipping it with a new turret and better armament. Thus, the VI Strv 74 was born, and a total of 225 vehicles were manufactured from 1957 through 1960. They remained in service of the Swedish Army until the end of 1984.

Firepower

The Strv 74 is equipped with a powerful 7.5 cm cannon by default, which can be upgraded to the faster and even more precise 7.5 cm kan strv 74. The excellent accuracy and fast aiming time, paired with high shell velocity, are big advantages on the battlefield. However, the true ace up your sleeve is the superb –15 degrees of gun depression.

It's the best value of its class, which means you won't peek over hills with ease but actually play positions that other medium tanks wouldn't even dare to occupy.

The downside is its low DPM. While you can reliably hit weak spots, even at long distance, racking up damage will take time due to its long reload time and an average alpha damage of 150.

Top tip: Upgrading the gun doesn't require any other vehicle improvements and should be considered very early on.

Survivability

Paper-thin armor, both on hull and turret, can easily be your downfall if you get caught off guard. And the large profile doesn’t do you any favors when it comes to camouflage values. Therefore, taking an enemy head-on will never be to your advantage, and hiding should only be a last resort. The path to victory lies in your good mobility, as well as your accurate gun which can stop any opponent in their tracks.

Mobility

The Strv 74 isn't the fastest medium tank in the game, with a top speed of only 45 km/h, but it has a very decent power-to-weight ratio and excellent maneuverability that should get you out of trouble if you have to. We recommend teaming up with fellow medium tanks and hunting as a pack to even out some of the shortcomings of the Swede, like the underwhelming view range.

Top tip: The narrow profile of the Strv 74 allows it to easily and effectively maneuver in tight spaces.

The suggested setup is primarily aimed at compensating for the various weaknesses of this vehicle. The Gun Rammer provides a necessary boost to the otherwise fairly slow loading time, while Improved Ventilation and Coated Optics are meant to mitigate the short view range.
