The Type 61 is very similar to its predecessor, the STA-1. The shape didn't change much but you can count on a tougher turret and a stronger gun with a bigger punch. With this combination, playing hull-down finally becomes a valid tactic.

Gameplay

Just like with the previous vehicles, the hull doesn't really deflect anything. You can achieve some lucky bounces from the gun mantlet but everything else is paper-thin. It's best to not ask for trouble here. It still has a very good gun depression angle, which makes it more difficult for the enemy to hit you - make good use of it to survive longer.

The Type 61 boasts very good acceleration, its mediocre top speed holds it back though. Nonetheless, it's good enough to keep up with the pace. It also has a high view range, which is nice, but most of the time not needed. This is because of the close and mid-range gameplay the Japanese mediums are suited for most.

Time to check out its gun, the 105 mm Rifled Gun. Its damage per shot is slightly lower than guns of the same calibre but it comes with a much better rate of fire. This allows you to shoot twice before most of the enemies you face have reloaded. Knowing the reload times and damage values of your opponents is an advantage, of course. We advise you to play as a second-line supporter, so sniping isn't the best choice for you – the accuracy is just not good enough.

Your small turret in combination with the superb gun depression angle makes hull-down tactics very efficient. This, plus the good stabilisation and penetration values help you take shots quickly, so no need to expose yourself for long to aim.

We recommend the Tank Gun Rammer together with the Vertical Stabilizer, for a higher damage per minute and a better chance of hitting your opponents. Go for Improved Ventilation for a general bonus to the combat parameters. Coated Optics don't make that much sense here, despite the good view range – this vehicle is most efficient up to mid-range.
