Commanders!
There are many iconic tanks in the game, but hardly any of them have managed to attain a cult status like the British VI TOG II* . One quick look at this behemoth of a war machine is enough to understand why it bears such potential for memes, jokes, and a dedicated fan base. Make sure to follow Richard "The Challenger" Cutland as he takes a look inside this monster.
The TOG II* was devised under the assumption that the developments of WWII would follow a similar progression as WWI, leading to static trench warfare that couldn’t be overcome by more modern tank designs. The British War Office, therefore, authorized the creation of the “Special Vehicle Development Committee of the Ministry of Supply” lead by experienced WWI tank designers such as Stern, Tritton, Swinton, and d’Eyncourt. They set out to create a new super-heavy tank that could break through fortified enemy lines. And thus the TOG was born, a monstrous war machine that weighed in at about 80 tons and required 6 crew members to operate. The name was derived from an unofficial nickname given to the Committee: The Old Gang.
Unfortunately, their first prototype, the TOG I, could not compete with modern tank developments and tended to malfunction. Not discouraged by this setback, they developed the concept further into what is today known in-game as the TOG II*. It remains an oddity as one of the largest vehicles in the collection. But that doesn’t mean it can’t fare well on the battlefields of World of Tanks. With a stupendous amount of HP, a classic fast-firing 17-pounder gun, and a boatload of shells, this tank is a cornerstone of any defense.
