When the brave Allied soldiers headed towards Normandy in June 1944, they didn’t know what to expect and the circumstances were far from ideal. The shoreline was fortified by the Atlantic Wall, they had to operate without the infrastructure of a large port, and their tanks had been modified to operate in shallow waters and sandy beaches.
