Allied troops in British Cromwells and American Shermans had successfully landed in Normandy on D-Day. Strong Soviet offensives in IS-2 and ISU vehicles were pushing in from the East. In under a year, the Allies from the West had reached the Elbe river, while Soviet and Polish troops prepared for one of the last major offensives of the European theater: the Battle of Berlin.
