Bretagne Panther: A Must-Have for History Connoisseurs

Commanders!

The German Panther became one of the most iconic tanks of the Second World War. But the tales of the captured vehicles are not as well known. Throughout the war, several Panthers were captured, repaired, and adorned with allied markings, then thrust back into service until the end of the war. The legendary VI Bretagne Panther is one of the finest examples of this.

Shortly after the Allies' successful D-Day invasion in June 1944, the Besnier Squadron, a rare and unusual unit of the Free French Forces, captured several armored vehicles, including two German Panthers. The new crew kept the original camouflage scheme, painted blue-white-red emblems and the Lorraine cross onto the turret, and christened the two tanks Auvergne and Bretagne, after French regions. Of the two, the Bretagne Panther survived over 70 years, and in 2017, the Musée des Blindées de Saumur in France began a restoration project to bring it back to its former glory.

Its good mobility and sloped front protect an impressively accurate 75 mm gun with great penetration. Meanwhile, a high rate of fire, large HP pool, and the ability to go on effective ramming rampages make this a fun and versatile medium to command.
