1. Update 1.1: Here Come the Poles

Updated

This year, we promised the addition of two new tank nations; Italy came first and now it’s time for the Polish brethren to take to the battlefield proper. The line will start with light tanks and eventually evolve into top-tier heavies through the mid-tier mediums.

Poland was the next logical step as a nation to add… but why? It was the gateway to the east and west throughout both World Wars and we want to commemorate the bravery and contribution of these people during these conflicts. And last but no means least, the Polish community is one of the largest and we want to pay tribute to their passion and devotion.

So enough chat, let’s get down to it!

Low Tiers

The preliminary Polish machines borrowed a lot from vehicles built by leading tank-manufacturers of the 30’s and 40’s. Their traits are similar to other nations—fast and dynamic vehicles with thin armor. But the one distinguishing feature of the low-tiered Poles is they have slightly increased alpha over their peers.

  • 10TP & 14TP

Based on the famous Vickers Carden Loyd, it weighs in at just over 4 tons and is equipped with a 85hp engine. You might start calling this the tiny “tractor”.

The British influence continues at Tier II. An evolution of the design laid down with the Vickers Mk. E, this went further than his “little brother”, with just under 150 tanks rolling off the production line.

Tiers III and IV can be seen as light tank brothers due to their similar models. The 10TP was prototyped and successfully tested in 1938-39 but due to the outbreak of the Second World War, work on the tank stopped and the prototype was destroyed.

A similar story (and fate) was left for the 14TP too, work was delayed in early 1939 as a suitable engine couldn’t be found and the tank was never assembled due to the German invasion in September that very year.

Medium Tiers

Marking the transition to heavy tanks in the higher tiers, the mid-tier tanks are diverse from a gameplay perspective, introducing a new set of combat roles. It’s easier to break it down like this:

  • Tier V—Light/Medium hybrid
  • Tier VI—Medium in a heavy’s armor
  • Tier VII—Medium/Heavy hybrid
  • Tank to Note—25 TP KSUST II
  • 40TP Habicha and 45TP Habicha

A tank concept developed in 1937, this Tier V has been long awaited by the Polish community. The “20/25TP” has been one of the most demanded models in recent history so we can’t wait to see this taking part on the battlefield. The tank has evolved from the lower-tiered Poles with a 75mm gun with 135HP alpha. Rather impressive when looking at medium peers.

Now we reach the two incarnations of a concept by Edward Habich. Both these tanks have come to life from the ideas of the talented Polish engineer, blending the best parts of contemporary German and Soviet designs. The Soviet influence resulted in sloped armor and the German influence brought compact turrets and high firepower. High firepower will be a consistent feature of the Polish tanks from Tier VI.

Note: In the transitional tank of Tier VII, it’s very important to be cautious in battle because it doesn’t boast the armor of a heavy.

Top Tiers

While the top-tiered Polish tanks never made it past the drawing board and were left alone in the archives, we believe it’s a great way of refreshing and bringing these machines to life. The three projects were thesis projects by graduate engineers; they would have seen a departure from the post-war Soviet vehicles their fleet used.

This Tier VIII tank is best seen as a transitional tank, bolstering the bridge between the medium and heavy brethren. It’s a relatively heavy but bulky tank with a couple of cannons (105mm and 122mm). Armor-wise, the tank has a tough turret on top of a weaker hull.

This Tier IX can be seen like the younger brother of the top tank in this tree. It boasts great alpha damage from its 130mm gun. Overall, note its destructive power and great armor but this is where things start to really slow down in terms of top speed.

In terms of size and looks, you’d be mistaken to think this was a Soviet vehicle. With the 152mm fitted on the tank, just note that your shot choice is extremely important; 250mm of penetration isn’t much, but when you target well, you can take off 750 HP with one shot. And the gun depression ain’t bad either lowering to -8 degrees.

This Tier X behemoth fits naturally as a hybrid of the IS-4 and E-100. In summary, a heavily armored, low-speed damage dealer that is perfect to crush enemy defenses.

2. Update 1.1 Common Test

Today, we launch the first Common Test of Update 1.1 with a new campaign of Personal Missions, new maps and those long-awaited Polish tanks.

Personal Missions: The Second Front

The anticipated second set of Personal Missions are here and they are coming in hot with a new name: “The Second Front”. Based on the same principles as the original set, it’s a completely new challenge for you to take on and you’ll be thrown into the midst of battle on the Second Front. Each success on the Front will bring even more rewards.

The Second Front will be available to all players. For those who haven't completed the 1st campaign, both sets of Personal Missions can be run in tandem.

Don’t think with the new set that it’s no longer about skill. Now Personal Missions will have three operations with different sets of conditions:

1st operation—all about persistence

2nd operation—all about skill in one battle (similar to the first campaign)

3rd operation—all about showing consistently good results over several battles

A big change to the feature is that tank classes will no longer be the restriction for Personal Missions. Instead, we now have a collection of national allegiances, which can take on certain missions.

And finally, you will also be able to check your progress towards the mission whilst in the heat of battle. For now, this is only for the new missions added with The Second Front, but we do aim to create a similar feature for the first set of Personal Missions.

New Maps

Studzianki

Not based on any historical location in particular, but inspired by the great battle near Studzianki, this map combines open spaces with some brawling spots. The location encompasses large fields, lots of vegetation, small village houses centered around a tall church. Dead center of the map is a small brick factory that will become a important point of interest during the course of battle.

 

Minsk

As we all know, Minsk is a city that is close to the heart of Wargaming. After all, the company was founded in the Belarusian capital. The new map creates the city’s center at the beginning of the 1970s. Though some things have been adjusted for the sake of gameplay, if you’ve visited Minsk, landmarks will be instantly recognizable. If not, just take in the scenery of this virtual city and dive into the past!

Important: The map is still on its final stage of optimization. During the Common test players might have some performance issues with the map.

 

Changes to Current Maps

Glacier

For the interest in gameplay balancing, many positions (including the aircraft carrier and the serpentine road) have been reworked. Both teams will see a more balanced fight when taking to the sub-zero climate of Glacier.

Siegfried Line

Siegfried Line has seen positions strengthened for the northern-spawning team. Many positions have been fortified with the addition of rocks and more opportunities have been added with terrain adjustments.

Mines

Mines needed a rebalance as it was favoring the north-spawning team too much. The left flank seemed to be a key point of advantage for the northerners with easier and quicker access to the big island. Using heat maps and observations in battle, we have made the map overall more balanced in favor of the south-spawning team.

Province

Reduced the battle tier of the map. It’s now IV-VII. With slight modifications to help out the southern team, the majority of changes were made to add shelter in various positions to help hide from fire.

Pilsen

The map is now in HD and has been increased in size from 800x800 to 1000x1000. Many edits have been made to improve the experience for all vehicle classes throughout the map. You may also note that the eastern part of the location has been completely redesigned.

 

Just before the release of Update 1.1, there will be a dedicated article to really get into the details of what’s changed on each map and how the new maps play.

Polish Tanks

With the new Poland map, it’s the perfect time to add the compatriots that did battle on these lands. So please welcome the latest nation to be added to World of Tanks and the 10 new Polish tanks.

We decided to add this nation due to the size of our Polish community and their importance in both World Wars, with their homeland becoming the gateway to the East and the West.

Starting with light tanks and evolving into heavies further up the line through the mid-tier mediums, it’s time to take these tanks for a spin!

Main Changes

1. New campaign of Personal Missions: Second Front

  1. The new campaign includes three operations:
    1. Operation: Excalibur (available right off)
    2. Operation: Chimera (becomes available after being unlocked with Orders that will be added in the evening of August 3)
    3. Operation: Object 279 (e) (will not be available within the Common Test)
  2. Each operation includes 4 sets of missions. At the same time, each set can be completed in vehicles that belong to one of the national allegiances, and vehicle types are no longer a restriction. To complete a mission, players should enter a battle in a vehicle that belongs to one of the following national allegiances:
    • Union—U.S.S.R. and China
    • Bloc—Germany and Japan
    • Alliance—U.S.A., U.K. and Poland
    • Coalition—France, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, and Italy
  1. The second campaign becomes available right off irrespective of the progress in the first campaign. Thus, missions of both campaigns can be completed at the same time.
  2. Each set includes 15 missions: 14 missions are available right off and can be completed in any order; at the same time, mission 15 (the final mission) becomes available after completing the rest of the missions (similarly to the first campaign).
  3. All operations have different sets of conditions:
    • Operation: Excalibur—accumulative missions. A mission should be completed within an unlimited number of battles, e.g. cause 10,000 damage within an unlimited number of battles.
    • Operation: Chimera—a mission can be completed within a single battle (similarly to the first campaign)
    • Operation: Object 279 (e)—a mission should be completed within a limited number of battles. If a player fails to complete a mission, its progress will be reset, and the player will have to start anew. This operation will not be available during the test.
  4. Each completed mission is rewarded with credits, consumables, etc. A completed operation is rewarded with a unique vehicle that cannot be received otherwise.
  5. Players will be able to check mission progress right in battle.
    • In Update 1.1, this feature will be available only for missions of the new campaign.
    • The detailed descriptions of the accepted missions will be available in battle upon pressing Tab or N.
  6. Indicator of Personal Missions in the Garage shows missions of each campaign separately.
  7. Operations of the Second Front campaign will become available successively after a certain time period. Players who complete an operation before the next one becomes available will be rewarded with a corresponding unique emblem.
  8. Improved the interface of the first campaign:
    • The main screen is completely reworked to display missions of both campaigns at the same time.
    • Improved the mission profile.
    • All elements were made consistent considering specifics of both campaigns.
    • New reward screens for completed Personal Missions.
    • Reworked the display of missions in battle (upon pressing Tab)

2. Maps

  • Added the new Studzianki map.
  • Added the new Minsk map.
  • Added the Pilsen map that has been reworked to HD. Main changes:

    • Increased map size from 800х800 to 1000х1000 m
    • Completely revised the eastern part of the map.
    • Made a number of balance and gameplay changes all over the map.

Minsk occupies a special place in our hearts—it’s where it all started for World of Tanks. A city with a vast heritage and wonderful people, it will finally take its place in the list of maps in World of Tanks. The whole team is very excited as it nears full release; after all, we’ve been planning to pay homage to the city for years.

The first playable prototype was created around the same time we introduced Kharkov and Stalingrad, but didn’t make it past this stage. We learned an important lesson before resuming work on the map: while historical accuracy might be appealing, it doesn’t always provide an enjoyable experience (unless you’re looking for a virtual tour rather than a battle, of course). That’s why we’re designing the map around real locations (Victory Square, the State Circus, Gorky Park, etc.) while also changing its general layout to keep the gameplay exciting and rewarding.

This urban map recreates the central part of Minsk in the beginning of the 1970s. Though we changed some details for the sake of gameplay, the Plošča Pieramohi (Victory Square) and the circus building, for example, are very realistic. Other houses and landmarks are also recognizable for those who have visited Minsk or currently live there.

The map has three gameplay zones.

  • Columns 1–2: The Lenin Avenue / Kupala Street intersection is good for mobile vehicles. Take firing positions quickly or try to flank the opposing side.
  • Columns 3–7: The zone formed by Gorky Park and the Svislach river embankment is covered in trees and bushes and has several mounds. It’s a tricky place: enemies can hit you from almost every direction, but playing wisely will let you support allies on the flanks or encroach on your opponents undetected.
  • Columns 8–0: Dense building blocks near the Plošča Pieramohi protect you from artillery fire, and favor well-armored vehicles and close-to-mid-range fighting. You can also try to snipe—if you’re bold enough to roll out on straight and broad streets.

 

Studzianki

Studzianki was the location of a weeklong battle between the invading German forces and the native Polish 1st Armoured Brigade and Soviet 8th Army on the Eastern Front. For the allied forces, it was a resounding success and was later commemorated in 1969, becoming Studzianki Pancerne (Armoured Studzianki).

The map features large fields, lots of vegetation, and small village houses centered around a tall Catholic church. A small brick factory sits right in the middle of this map. 

There are three gameplay zones on the map.

  • Rows A-C: The brick factory is for those driving vehicles with thick hides. It’s protected from tank destroyer fire but you may feel shells coming from other parts of the map. Control the factory to help your allies extend their attacks on neighboring routes or to defend, should you lose the flanks. The dried riverbed splitting the factory is a place of interest for fast light tanks and for vehicles with good gun depression: here you can secure a flank promptly.
  • Rows D-F: The central part of the map can be used to spot enemies at the beginning of the battle. It suits light tanks and fast mediums. A ditch goes from the factory to the village; use it to spot the opponents or to flank them when they least expect it. The field is surrounded by hills with some concealing shrubbery offering nice striking positions and a safe passage to the village.
  • Rows G-K: The village is a place for every vehicle class: lots of cover (both destructible and indestructible), bushes, and shoot-throughs. Capture it to assist your teammates at the factory or to set up a final assault on the enemy base.

 

Major Changes to Pilsen

Pilsen felt too small and gave little in terms of gameplay to turretless TDs and thinly armored vehicles. Medium tanks kept away from the center of the east flank since it offered no cover from arty shells. The west flank had way too many shoot-through zones, which prevented both teams from pushing/defending certain directions and turned battles into a fine frenzy. Once you entered this area, you were effectively stuck there with no way to retreat or advance. Finally, the central area promoted camping since the impassable big hangar there was a death trap for anyone reckless enough to move past it.

Addressing your feedback, we enlarged the map to 1x1 km, added cover spots and increased the distance between hangars on the left flank, removed some of the buildings in no-man's land in the center, and completely redesigned the eastern (right) flank.

These changes should foster a more versatile experience, while also making the map friendly for all vehicle classes.

We’ve added hills to the north- and south-west. If you’re driving a TD, leverage them to help protect the base and/or hold enemies that are using the road to the left from the hangars to break into your territory.

Now, you can crossover to the left flank using a newly added road close to the hangar (3).

The distance between bases has increased, with both camps getting cover spots to set up a solid defensive line to protect their bases.

The right flank’s been through a complete makeover. Now, it’s less about brute force and more about mobile lights and mediums working together among coal hills (5). Scouts can poke over hillsides to detect enemies lying in cover nearby and in TD spots (6). Mediums should keep behind lights and fire on anything that’s been spotted. TDs are tasked with hunting down lights and mediums between hills and taking down enemy TDs that were careless enough to expose themselves.

The far-right edge of the map now features a long, straight railroad with dense shrubs and hardly any other cover. Circumventing the enemy would take you a few steps closer to winning the battle. Make sure you’ve got support in the hills before you head there, though. You’ll need them to distract enemy TDs after you spot them. Then, move ahead to destroy enemy arty that’s likely to hide there. Stay alert: without any hard cover, you should expect SPG fire if you are spotted and staying still.

 

Changes to Current Maps

Glacier

To correct imbalances on the map, the following changes were made:

Added a covered position on the aircraft carrier, allowing the northern team to retake it.

Balanced the shoot-throughs to allow hitting the tanks rolling onto the carrier.

Added covered positions helping the northern team move from behind the carrier.

Nerfed a TD position for the southern team that allowed to shoot at everything along the central fault line.

Improved the northern side’s positions near the serpentine road.

Siegfried Line

Strengthened positions for the top team:

Adjusted the terrain; made the stone walls taller. No more sniping shoot-throughs here from the southern side.

Put a pile of rocks into the arch and by the corner of the house to fortify this position for the northern team.

Moved the stone wall a bit to create a shoot-through for a new TD firing position (5).

Created a new TD firing position with bush coverage and with a good view of the main attack directions and the city exits.

Adjusted the terrain inside of the block. More opportunities for the northern side to press on the opponents and force them to leave cover.

Added a rock pile here. It will make pushing through the enemy lines and countering their moves more convenient in this direction.

Mines

A moderate rebalance in favor of the south-spawning team.

The positions of the south-spawning team on the small island have been improved.

Improved positions for tank destroyers spawning in the south: reduced the height of the rocks (resulting in a clear shoot-through on both islands), added thicker bushes and created more space.

The spawn of the south is a little closer to the islands and the center of the map.

One of the reasons for this is the dominance of the north-spawning team on the left flank, based on the information gathered through heat maps and observations in battle. The big island is closer to the north team, giving them an advantage in battle in the majority of cases.

After this, if the south team doesn’t manage to defend the small island, the northerners go behind the lower team tanks fighting to climb the hill, and also get an opportunity to get close to the enemy’s TD positions.

Reduced the battle tier of the map, it’s now for tiers IV–VII.

Turned the house to allow south-spawning tanks to have a good shoot-through at the north-spawning team. The north-spawning team already have this ability.

A corner slope has been added to the monastery: south-spawning tanks will now be able to attack this direction.

4. Update 1.1: Personal Missions: The Second Front

Many updates ago, the first iteration of Personal Missions arrived. These additional challenges ultimately rewarded you with the highly sought-after female tankers and a selection of special tanks.

As an extra bonus, here’s a never-seen-before interface that never made it off the production line:

Almost a year ago, Personal Missions received a major overhaul with Update 9.20.1. The update made it easier for players to understand the overall concept and the addition of Orders gave them a helping hand to finally complete that one pesky challenge they had left, keeping them from their female tank member or reward vehicle.

Now, we are about to release The Second Front: a new collection of missions with rewards just as good as the first campaign! With a base from the same principles as the original, these are completely new challenges for you to reap memorable rewards.

The Second Front will be available to all players. For those who haven't completed the 1st campaign, both sets of Personal Missions can be run in tandem.

For those of you looking to be efficient, take a look at the missions within The Second Front and pick similar tasks from the first campaign to complete in a single battle.

EXAMPLE: Running Bloc-2 (2nd Campaign) and Heavy Tanks Mission 15 (1st Campaign) at the same time means you can complete 2 missions with 1 battle.

More Operations, More Rewards

For seasoned veterans, the missions will be similar to what you’ve previously taken on, but now there are three different sets of operations with a collective condition:

  • The first operation is all about persistence. These are missions that can be completed over time and require you to show your prowess in victory and resilience in the jaws of defeat. These missions have a secondary task that’s not needed to start the next mission, but completing it means doubling your progress towards a blueprint.
  • The second operation is all about showcasing your skill in one specific battle. These missions revolve around one match, whether it be dealing a set amount of damage, destroying enough enemy tanks, or any other objective. They are reminiscent of the older Personal Missions.
  • The third operation is all about showing consistently good results over several battles. These missions require you to have more than just luck on your side. Prove your worth over a series of battles to complete these missions.

Each operation will unlock after a certain timeframe. The first operation starts with the release of Update 1.1. The other operations start:

3rd operation: 10.10.2018

Those of you who complete the operation before the next one starts will be duly rewarded with a special emblem to apply to your tanks so you can flex in front of the other tankers you meet.

Uniting Nations

A big change with The Second Front is that vehicle types will no longer restrict Personal Missions. Instead, four new national formations have been formed:

  • Union: U.S.S.R. and China
  • Bloc: Germany and Japan
  • Alliance: U.S.A., U.K. and Poland
  • Coalition: France, Sweden, Czechoslovakia and Italy

Now you can go and complete these missions in any vehicle type you see fit.

Better Interface

Our team have been hard at work checking for and ironing out all the creases ready for the launch of The Second Front. With their efforts, players will now have an easier time understanding how many battles are needed to fulfill a mission’s conditions.

Also, we heard your feedback about keeping track of your mission in battle. Now, the addition of a live progress bar makes it simpler to see how close you are to completion.

New Orders and Blueprints

Orders will differ between the two campaigns so no player can simply buy the tank outright. We chose not to combine the Orders with the first campaign’s ones as these new Personal Missions are all about fresh challenges, tasks and rewards. You can earn Orders by completing the final combat missions of each operation with honors.

Finally, in the first campaign, after completing a set of missions, you were given specific parts to the tank. Not anymore. Now you will be granted their blueprints. The core concept remains the same: unlock 4 blueprints and you earn the tank. But don’t worry, you will not lose your progress on already started missions from the first campaign!

5. Find Players Quickly with the 1.1 Stronghold

Update 1.1 introduced an important change to the Strongholds: the ability to auto search for teams and players. Finding a suitable team or legionnaires to play alongside has become much easier.

How it works for players

We have revamped the Clan Battles window for use in Strongholds and added the ability to auto search for teams and players:

Now all you need to do to find a detachment is to select the desired vehicles and click “Battle!”. A detachment of players with the closest average skill level will be found automatically, while the vehicle used will be determined according to the list set by the Detachment Commander.

Naturally, searching for teams from the detachment list will work the same way as before—just switch to the “Detachment List” tab.

New for Commanders

If you need to quickly find players for your team, you no longer have to wait until someone joins the detachment and ask them what vehicles they have. You simply define the type of vehicles for players to play on, or specify particular vehicles:


When all the detachment slots have been occupied by players or set to auto search, the search for legionnaires will begin after you click “Battle!”.

The players found will match the team’s average skill level, and the vehicles used will depend on the players’ and Commander’s presets.

When and where it works

The autosearch feature is always active for Skirmishes in division VI. For divisions VIII and X, the system is enabled on Saturdays, the day when War Games take place in Strongholds.

This way, searching for both teams to play in and players to play with during the busiest period in Strongholds will be easier.

Important: The auto search feature is still being tweaked and tested, so please leave your feedback on the forums, as it is important to us.
